Controlling and varying volume level in a deliberate manner

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Uniform volume throughout with no variation

Example Performance at same volume level from start to finish

  • Level 2 Approaching

    Limited volume variation but inconsistent

Example Some sections louder than others without clear pattern

  • Level 3 At Standard

Clear volume variation enlivening the performance

Example Jumps between high and low give performance life

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Dynamics serving the overall musical expression

Example Volume rises and falls express the piece's subject

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Dynamics as primary tool in the piece's emotional expression

Example Silence between notes completes the dynamics
