Framing & Composition

Choosing what enters the frame and what's excluded, and distributing elements

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

    Random framing losing the subject

Example Main subject at image edge or cut off

  • Level 2 Approaching

    Reasonable framing with distracting elements

Example Subject clear but busy background distracts

  • Level 3 At Standard

    Deliberate framing highlighting the subject

Example Viewer finds subject immediately and feels comfortable with image

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Creative framing adding meaning to the image

Example The frame itself expresses the image's subject

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Framing that tells a complete story alone

Example Changing framing would completely alter image's meaning
