Visual Metaphor

Building a figurative meaning linking the image to an idea beyond its frame

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

An image carrying no figurative dimension

Example A direct record referring to no idea

  • Level 2 Approaching

A direct or clichéd metaphor that doesn't convince

Example An overly obvious comparison losing its effect

  • Level 3 At Standard

A clear metaphor convincingly linking the image to an idea

Example An open door alluding to the idea of beginning and possibility

  • Level 4 Above Standard

A rich metaphor provoking contemplation beyond the visible subject

Example The image lingers because its meaning exceeds its frame

  • Level 5 Exemplary

A metaphor summarizing a human truth in a single image

Example One image saying about the human condition what words cannot
