Surface & Texture
Quality of the product's surface treatment and texture, visually and tactilely
The five levels
Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.
-
Level 1 Below Standard
A rough, neglected, or inconsistent surface
Example Smooth areas and rough ones with no intent
-
Level 2 Approaching
A partially treated surface with neglected areas
Example The front smooth and the back rough
-
Level 3 At Standard
A well-treated surface with consistent texture
Example All the product's surfaces smooth and pleasant
-
Level 4 Above Standard
An intentional texture adding a sensory dimension to the product
Example A deliberate textural contrast between the product's parts
-
Level 5 Exemplary
Exceptional texture where touch alone reveals the craftsmanship
Example Merely holding it tells you it is fine handwork
