Traditional Pattern Fidelity

Conformance of Islamic ornament / Sadu to its geometric rules: the grid, closing repetition, star symmetry.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Broken pattern: grid off, repeat doesn't close, star asymmetric.

Example An eight-point star with unequal points.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Surface imitation resembling the pattern but with wrong proportions and angles.

Example An arabesque resembling the original with imprecise angles.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Correct pattern: grid disciplined, repeat closes, star symmetry sound.

Example A geometric repeat closing on itself tightly.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Traditional mastery: geometrically correct, cleanly executed, respecting the ornament's logic.

Example Sadu with authentic, tight Bedouin motifs.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Innovation within tradition; adding to the pattern without breaking its rules — a living dialogue with heritage.

Example A new ornamental composition honouring the original geometry.
