Clay Centring

Centring the clay mass steadily on the axis before forming — the base of every balanced ceramic piece.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

An off-centre mass that wobbles, so the piece is skewed from the start.

Example A vessel with a tilted axis and uneven wall thickness.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Approximate centring with a slight wobble showing in the form.

    Example A slightly uneven rim.

  • Level 3 At Standard

A centred, steady mass allowing balanced forming.

Example A steady axis and a level rim.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Tight centring holding even as the wall is raised and thinned.

Example A raised, even wall without axis drift.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Masterful centring granting full forming freedom and a pure form.

Example A perfectly symmetric piece, as if machine-made.
