Functional vs Decorative Intent
The form serving its declared function, or a clear decorative intent, without ornament feigning a function it can't perform.
The five levels
Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.
-
Level 1 Below Standard
A clash between form and its declared function, so it fails to serve it.
Example A cup whose handle isn't comfortable to hold.
-
Level 2 Approaching
Intent present but execution partly fails the function.
Example A pitcher that pours with slight dribbling.
-
Level 3 At Standard
The form clearly serves its function, or the decorative intent is explicit.
Example A bowl that holds, grips, and pours with ease.
-
Level 4 Above Standard
Beauty and function integrated; each strengthening the other.
Example A beautiful handle that genuinely improves the grip.
-
Level 5 Excellence
The functional piece carries a voice and mood without sacrificing performance.
Example An everyday tool used and treasured for its beauty alike.
