Firing Result

The piece's soundness after firing: no cracks, blisters, or warping, with mature colour.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Cracking, blistering, or warping that ruins the piece.

Example A thermal crack across the base.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Generally sound with a minor firing defect.

    Example A small glaze blister.

  • Level 3 At Standard

A sound piece after firing with no visible defects.

Example A clean surface and mature colour.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

A refined firing showing intended colour and texture.

Example A uniform glaze in a planned colour.

  • Level 5 Excellence

A masterful firing result: colour, texture, and soundness a deliberate, refined choice.

Example A deliberate glaze effect hard to repeat.
