Carving Depth Uniformity

Even carving or engraving depth across the pattern so light and shadow are uniform.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Uneven depth that disrupts the pattern's shadow.

Example Carved lines, some deep, some shallow.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Near-even depth with variation in places.

Example A patch deeper than its neighbours.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Uniform depth giving the pattern consistent shadow.

Example An engraving of even, clean depth.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Refined depth using shadow to bring out the pattern's layers.

Example A graded-depth carving building visual depth.

  • Level 5 Excellence

A masterful carving of refined depth turning shadow into an aesthetic element.

Example A carving where light and shadow play as if sculpted from light.
