Thread Tension

Tuning thread tension so it neither puckers the fabric nor leaves the stitch loose.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Excess tension puckering the fabric, or loose tension leaving gaps.

Example Puckered fabric around a stitch row.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Acceptable tension with slight puckering in places.

Example Slight rippling at thread ends.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Balanced tension keeping the fabric flat and the stitch firm.

Example A flat surface and firm stitches.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Refined tension serving the intended texture (raised or flat).

Example A deliberately raised stitch from measured tension.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Masterful tension giving fabric and stitch full harmony and an intended texture.

Example Embroidery flat as print or impeccably raised.
