Respecting the Grain

Working with the wood grain's direction, not against it, and using it aesthetically.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Cutting against the grain so the surface splinters or splits.

Example Splintering at an edge cut against the grain.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Grain awareness with errors in places.

Example A smooth surface except for a splintered patch.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Work consistent with the grain yielding a clean surface.

    Example Smooth surfaces without splintering.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Using the grain pattern as an aesthetic element in the design.

Example A symmetric grain adorning the piece's face.

  • Level 5 Excellence

A full dialogue with the grain; the form grows from a deep reading of its direction and beauty.

Example A piece where the grain looks designed for it.
