Creating sense of depth and third dimension in two-dimensional space

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

No depth, everything on one level

Example Near and far elements same size

  • Level 2 Approaching

    Depth attempt but inconsistent

Example Some elements correct in perspective, others not

  • Level 3 At Standard

Convincing depth giving work three-dimensional feel

Example Viewer feels they could enter the painting

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Depth expressed through multiple harmonious techniques

Example Linear + color + atmospheric perspective harmonized

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Depth as expressive tool creating mood and atmosphere

Example Exaggerated or reduced depth expresses something
