Aesthetic Unity
Overall work cohesion — every element serves the complete vision
The five levels
Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.
-
Level 1 Below Standard
Inconsistent elements, work without unifying vision
Example Each element looks from a different painting
-
Level 2 Approaching
Partial unifying vision but some elements discordant
Example Work starts cohesively then collapses at the end
-
Level 3 At Standard
Acceptable aesthetic unity giving sense of work's harmony
Example Viewer senses painting is complete and harmonious
-
Level 4 Above Standard
Strong unity — every element necessary and harmonious
Example Cannot remove any element without weakening the whole
-
Level 5 Exemplary
Organic unity — painting as living being with internal harmony
Example Painting "breathes" as one unit — parts interconnected like body organs
