Visual Narrative

Painting narrating a story or expressing a position without words

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Descriptive painting only, no story or stance

Example Painting describing a place or person without context

  • Level 2 Approaching

    Story suggestion but incomplete

Example Viewer senses something happened but doesn't know what

  • Level 3 At Standard

Clear story or understandable stance in the painting

Example Viewer reads painting as they'd read a scene

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Visual narrative raising questions and demanding contemplation

Example Viewer tries to understand and interpret the painting

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Visual narrative that changes something in the viewer

Example Viewer leaves painting with a new question about themselves
