Leading Lines

Using lines within the scene to lead the viewer's eye toward the subject

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Scene lines distract or lead away from the subject

Example A road leading the viewer's eye out of the frame

  • Level 2 Approaching

Lines present but not intentional in the composition

Example A horizontal line cutting the image without a clear role

  • Level 3 At Standard

Lines clearly leading the eye to the subject

Example A fence leading the gaze straight to the figure

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Intersecting lines building depth and movement in the composition

Example Converging lines creating a sense of distance and momentum

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Lines create a visual structure that is unseen yet felt

Example The viewer is led unconsciously through the entire story
