Color Harmony

The relationship among the image's colors and their ability to build a unified mood

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Clashing colors that distract and serve no mood

Example Loud colors competing in every corner

  • Level 2 Approaching

Most colors harmonious with one jarring color jumping out

Example A calm palette broken by a garishly colored element

  • Level 3 At Standard

Harmonious colors building a clear mood

Example Close warm tones giving the image intimacy

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Intentional color expressing the image's emotional subject

Example Complementary color contrast highlighting the scene's tension

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Color as an independent language summarizing the image's essence

Example The work is remembered by its color before its subject
