Point of View & Angle

Choosing camera position and angle to change the viewer's relationship to the subject

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

A default eye-level angle with no choice made

Example Every shot taken from a direct standing position

  • Level 2 Approaching

Trying different angles but without tying them to meaning

Example A low angle for no reason serving the subject

  • Level 3 At Standard

An intentional angle serving the reading of the subject

Example A high angle showing the subject small amid its surroundings

  • Level 4 Above Standard

A point of view that changes the viewer's emotional relationship to the subject

Example A low angle granting an ordinary subject grandeur

  • Level 5 Exemplary

A unique viewpoint redefining how the subject is seen

Example After your image, it's hard to see the subject any other way
