Color Temperature Grading in Service of Mood

Adjusting color temperature and tone in post-processing consistently across the whole frame to support one deliberate, specific mood.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Color tones conflict within the same image, or simply reflect the camera's default setting with no deliberate treatment.

Example a yellow white-balance on the face against a cold blue background, for no reason.

  • Level 2 Approaching

An intentional color direction is visible, but it isn't consistent throughout the frame or it overwhelms the subject's detail.

Example a strong warm grade across the image with a leftover cold patch in one corner.

  • Level 3 At Standard

A single, consistent color grade across the whole image supports a clearly legible mood.

Example a uniform cool blue grade that gives the scene a sense of isolation.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

The relationship between warm and cool colors within the frame is managed to create a tension or balance that serves the story.

Example warm skin tones against a cool blue background, emotionally separating the figure from its surroundings.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Color treatment becomes the image's primary language for meaning, such that the feeling would change entirely if the grade were altered.

Example a faded yellow grade that ages a contemporary moment, suggesting a distant memory.
