Rhythm & Flow
The text's ability to flow without stumbling, with sentence length variation that serves meaning
The five levels
Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.
-
Level 1 Below Standard
Broken sentences, exhausting rhythm, reader constantly loses the thread
Example It was cold. The sky was cloudy. I walked. I felt nothing.
-
Level 2 Approaching
Fluctuating rhythm, some sentences flow while others stumble
Example Scene opens with short quick sentences, then suddenly a breathless long paragraph.
-
Level 3 At Standard
Stable rhythm, good variation between short and long sentences
Example The text breathes naturally, reader doesn't stumble but isn't dazzled either.
-
Level 4 Above Standard
Clear musical rhythm, sentences consciously serve meaning
Example Reader feels short and long sentences playing together like musical instruments.
-
Level 5 Exemplary
Rhythm creates emotional impact, controlled at professional level
Example Cold. The sky sealed like a fist. I walk, my heart resisting that idea that refuses to leave.
