Sensory Description

Using the five senses to bring the scene vividly to the reader

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Generic abstract description without any sensory details

Example "A beautiful room" without stating what makes it so

  • Level 2 Approaching

Relies on sight only, neglects other senses

Example Describes colors and shapes but no sound, smell, or texture

  • Level 3 At Standard

Uses sight and one or two other senses in harmony

Example Mentions light and sound together but mostly neglects smell and touch

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Employs 3-4 senses with natural harmony, not forced

Example Scene fully present: visual, auditory, olfactory in balance

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Integrates all senses naturally creating complete scene presence

Example "A room smelling of old books, sun flooding it at an angle, floor wood creaking underfoot, silence heavy as a curtain"
