Movement Expression

Conveying sense of movement and vitality in a static work

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Completely static work, no sense of life

Example Characters appear sculpted not alive

  • Level 2 Approaching

    Some movement suggestion but unconvincing

Example Movement attempted but appears frozen

  • Level 3 At Standard

Clear movement suggestion enlivening the work

Example Viewer feels objects were in motion

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Expressive movement making viewer feel they see a living moment

Example Work freezes a moment like a living photograph

  • Level 5 Exemplary

    Movement expressing the subject's spirit

Example Manner of movement says something about subject's character
