Visual Economy

Achieving maximum impact with minimum number of elements

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

    Excessive detail, work cluttered

    Example Work cluttered with everything

  • Level 2 Approaching

Some economy but still some excess

Example Most elements necessary but some could be removed

  • Level 3 At Standard

Reasonable economy — most elements serve the work

Example Work free from obvious filler

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Mastered economy — every element necessary

Example Removing any element weakens the work

  • Level 5 Exemplary

    Extreme economy creating exceptional power

Example Painting saying everything with least amount
