Varying voice pitch to serve expression and avoid monotony

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

    Single tone throughout recitation

Example Monotone recitation reflecting no emotional change

  • Level 2 Approaching

Limited tonal variation partially breaking monotony

Example Some rise and fall but insufficient

  • Level 3 At Standard

    Tonal variation reflecting emotional content

Example Tone rises and falls with context convincingly

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Rich tonal variation gripping listener's attention

Example Listener doesn't get distracted because tone constantly renews

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Tone as primary tool in conveying meaning and emotion

Example Tone says what words cannot
