Emotional Transition

Convincingly shifting between emotional states without contrived jumps

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

    Sudden unbelievable jumps between emotions

Example Going from laughter to tears with no buildup

  • Level 2 Approaching

    Transitions present but sometimes stumbling

Example A transition begins then slips back to the prior state

  • Level 3 At Standard

Smooth transitions convincing of the state's change

Example Anger turns into sorrow believably

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Subtle transitions revealing the layers beneath the surface

Example Joy tinged with fear is heard in the tone

  • Level 5 Exemplary

Transitions that feel natural as if happening for the first time

Example The listener feels the emotion is born then, not performed
