Arabic Articulation (Makhārij)

Pronouncing Arabic letters from their correct points (pharyngeal, emphatic, qalqala) without swallowing word endings.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Swallowed letters and wrong articulation points that muddle comprehension.

Example Pronouncing ẓāʾ as ḍād and swallowing word endings.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Mostly correct articulation with errors on difficult letters.

Example ʿayn and ḥāʾ not always distinct.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Correct pharyngeals and emphatics, with endings not swallowed.

Example Clarity distinguishing ṣād from sīn and qāf from kāf.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Full clarity even under speed and emotion, with correct qalqala.

Example Clear qalqala on qāf and ṭāʾ in rapid delivery.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Mastery of articulation making Arabic letters a music of clear contours.

Example A delivery where each letter is heard pure, without affectation.
