Character Distinction
Giving each character in the performance a voice and tone distinguishing it from others
The five levels
Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.
-
Level 1 Below Standard
All characters in one voice, indistinguishable
Example Unclear who is speaking in the dialogue
-
Level 2 Approaching
Partial distinction lost when dialogue speeds up
Example Two characters distinguished while the rest blur
-
Level 3 At Standard
Each character with a voice that clearly distinguishes it
Example The listener knows the speaker without a cue
-
Level 4 Above Standard
Character voices reflecting their psychology, not just their shapes
Example A character's hesitation is audible in its tone
-
Level 5 Exemplary
Each character a complete living being through voice alone
Example The characters are believable as if several actors performed them
