Breath Support & Phrase Length

Diaphragmatic breath and carrying a phrase on one breath without the voice cutting or its energy dropping at line ends.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Short breath cutting the phrase mid-way with a clear energy drop.

Example A voice fading before the sentence's end.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Breath enough for short phrases but long ones falter.

Example A long sentence whose voice breaks near its end.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Steady breath support carrying phrases with consistent energy to the end.

Example A long phrase reaching its end with strength.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Control letting breath serve both the long phrase and the dramatic pause.

Example A measured pause taken without breaking the sentence.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Breath a complete meaning-tool; taken and distributed as part of the performance.

Example A long delivery with no audible trace of breathing.
