Pitch Range & Anti-Monotone
Varying vocal pitch (range) to break monotony and serve meaning without exaggeration.
The five levels
Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.
-
Level 1 Below Standard
A monotone throughout (very narrow range).
Example A single-pitch delivery losing attention.
-
Level 2 Approaching
Colour in a few spots amid dominant monotony.
Example A single pitch rise on one question.
-
Level 3 At Standard
Pitch variation that breaks monotony and serves meaning.
Example Pitch rise and fall distinguishing question from statement.
-
Level 4 Above Standard
An expressive, varied pitch contour, consistent and serving the mood.
Example A pitch gradient building tension toward a climax.
-
Level 5 Excellence
Pitch a precise meaning-tool; intentional rise and fall revealing the text's layers.
Example A pitch revealing irony beneath apparent seriousness.
