Stress on the Key Word

Placing vocal energy on the most important word so stress guides the meaning.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Random or absent stress, so the important doesn't stand out.

Example All words at the same energy so meaning is lost.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Stress on the right word in some sentences, not all.

Example One key sentence right, another flat.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Precise, consistent stress guiding the meaning across the text.

Example The key word takes the energy in every sentence.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Stress revealing deeper meaning and steering the listener's understanding precisely.

Example Shifting the stress deliberately changes the sentence's reading.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Stress revealing layers of meaning and letting the listener hear between the lines.

Example Stress conveying sarcasm or longing without an extra word.
