Pause as Meaning

Using intentional silence (the pause) to build tension and meaning, not just to breathe.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Random pauses breaking meaning, or their absence making delivery breathless.

Example A stop in the middle of a connected phrase.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Pauses at correct breathing points but without dramatic use.

Example A grammatically sound stop but without effect.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Pauses that serve meaning and separate ideas clearly.

Example A pause separating a condition from its answer.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Dramatic pauses building tension and holding the listener's attention.

Example Silence before a reveal charging the moment.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Silence a mastered dramatic weapon; the pause sometimes says more than speech.

Example A long, measured pause carrying the scene's whole weight.
