Spacing-System Consistency

Using a fixed spacing scale (4/8) and optically tuned spacing instead of arbitrary gaps.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Random gaps making the layout feel disjointed.

Example Different margins between identical elements.

  • Level 2 Approaching

An emerging spacing scale but with anomalies.

Example Most gaps regular, a few off.

  • Level 3 At Standard

A fixed spacing scale governing all gaps.

Example All gaps are multiples of a base unit.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Optically tuned spacing that overrides metric where needed.

Example Optical adjustment around Arabic letters and kashida.

  • Level 5 Excellence

A mastered spacing rhythm giving the layout calm and visual confidence.

Example Whitespace in which the design breathes, neither crammed nor scattered.
