Arabic Letterform Integrity

Correct connection and shaping of Arabic letters without breaking or distortion, with awareness of script and kashida as an aesthetic decision.

The five levels

Each anchor describes what separates one level from the next — not a general description of quality. This is the text the evaluator itself reads.

  • Level 1 Below Standard

Broken or mis-connected letters (a sign of a tool that doesn't support Arabic).

Example Arabic rendered with each letter detached.

  • Level 2 Approaching

Mostly correct connection but some shapes distorted.

Example A final-form letter looking truncated.

  • Level 3 At Standard

Correct shaping and connection for all letters.

Example Arabic text reading smoothly without breaks.

  • Level 4 Above Standard

Awareness of script (Naskh/Thuluth/Kufi) and kashida as a deliberate aesthetic decision.

Example A kashida used to tune line alignment without distortion.

  • Level 5 Excellence

Mastery of the Arabic letter as an aesthetic system; every connection and kashida intentional.

Example An Arabic composition respecting script structure and innovating within it.
